2013 'New-Look' BLAST a great success

51 people, over five events, with ages ranging from 5 to 78 walking, running and mountain biking - what a great day!

Thanks to all those who came and supported our event, we hope you enjoyed the friendly people, the superb trails and of course the lovely sunshine. it was a beautiful Autumn day and great to be outdoors in such a wonderful setting.

Huge thanks to Waihi LandSAR for course safety and all the volunteers who worked together on the day to make the event run smoothly. And of course, special thanks to Pauline for pulling it all together. We all agree that the format, setting and timing (except the fact that it was Mother's day) work well and after this 'trial run' we're sure the event will grow in the future.

The BLAST is back for 2013
- and It's now a totally off-road event on all new trails -
Sunday 12th May

Yes, the BLAST is back. And with a whole new off-road format that showcases Waihi's new awesome mountain bike and running trails. The 2013 event promises to be a great occasion.

NEW... totally OFF-ROAD course
For 2013 our popular annual BLAST event has been re-launched with a new date and is now completely off-road!

The new autumn date should mean settled weather and the new off-road courses will appeal to those who like to get dirty on the weekend.

There are short and long courses for all levels of fitness and ability. For those new to mountain biking or off-road running we’ve included short “have a go” options to introduce you to these fun sports. You can choose to walk, run or mountain bike over a distance that suits you.

Trail RUN and Trail WALK

All run and walk courses start in the beautiful park at Gilmour Lake. From here you’ll make your way out to Clarke Street then turn right towards Black Hill. The 10km participants will swing left onto the new track through Union Hill before looping back to Clarke Street and heading towards Winner Hill. From the cul-de-sac the 10k’ers will follow the yellow triangular markers which will bring you back to Clarke Street and the finish line back at Gilmour Lake.

5km participants will follow the pink triangular markers from the cul-de-sac, through the pine forest at the foot of Winner Hill, then around Black Hill and back to Clarke Street and the finish line at Gilmour Lake.

The new OFF ROAD BLAST MTB course has been inspired by the popular Nugget multisport event. You’ll ride much of the same stunning trails that twist and turn through native bush, pine forest, farmland and around the Ohinemuri River. The grade isn’t too steep and the trails are only moderately technical – this course is all about variety and having a BLAST.

The 5km “Have a Go” MTB course is designed with people who are new to the sport in mind. It’s picturesque and mostly wide open and flattish. You may have to push through a couple of short sections, but it’s worth it because the riding is great.

The 20km mountain bike course includes all the best sections from the Nugget, including all the new sweeping bermed trails in the pine and native forest. You’ll go from tight and semi-technical to wide-open full bore BLASTS. It’s a honey of a course!
